To find the midpoint of (x1,y1), (x2,y2) take the average of the coordinates... So, M=( (x1+x2)/2, (y1+y2)/2 ) Since you want it to fall on the y-axis, you want the x value of the midpoint to be 0. Substitute x1=3p and x2=9 into (x1+x2)/2=0 and solve for p.
