would the answer be -8/45
OpenStudy (anonymous):
no try again
OpenStudy (anonymous):
8/45
OpenStudy (anonymous):
x = 2/9 + 2/5
x = 10/45 + 18/45 = 28/45
OpenStudy (anonymous):

add 2/5 to both sides to get x on its own and right side becomes 2/9 + 2/5
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yep
OpenStudy (anonymous):
think of an equation as a chemical balance - whatever you do to one side you have to do to the other
OpenStudy (anonymous):
- in order to maintain the balance
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so here is a new one 3/11x=-15

so would have to divide
OpenStudy (anonymous):
right - in order to get x on its own we have to divide both sides by 3/11
or x by 11/3
so x = -15 x 11/3
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so it would be -11/45
OpenStudy (anonymous):
no - maybe you are getting confused with the fact we usuaaly use / for division on computers. its easier to see if we write it as follows:-
-15 x 11 -165
-- = ----- = -55
3 3

yes after multipying you finally divide
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok thanks
OpenStudy (anonymous):
dividing fractions - turn second upside down and then multiply
eg 3 4 3 5 15
-- / -- = -- x -- = ---
7 5 7 4 28
OpenStudy (anonymous):
see how long it takes to write that!!
thats why people use /
