OpenStudy (anonymous):

how many 3-person groups can be formed in a club with only 8 people? Explain

OpenStudy (amistre64):

8C3

OpenStudy (amistre64):

or simply 8P3 ---- 3!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

either way its 56

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the explaining part is a bit sketchy; youd have to draw diagrams and lines and subtract out the things you count twice and such

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay thank you so much

OpenStudy (amistre64):

there are a total of 8*7*6 ways to pick 3 people out of 8; 336 ways, but alot of those groups are the same since that method does not consider different groupings of the same elements to be the same. abc and bca and cab would all be counted as different; so we have to adjust for that

ohhhhhhh

The sales tax rate in Jackson is 8% of which the town keeps all the proceeds. The town is saving for a new traffic meter which costs $124. How much must the Jackson sell to earn enough money to purchase the new traffic meter?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

124 equals 8 percent of some value; so divide 124 by 8 to get 1 percent of the value and just multiply that by 100 to get the total amount 124 ---- x 100 = total amount needed 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i tried that its telling me the answer is 1148.15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its multiple choice and i just took the 1550 and multiplied it by .08 to get 124 then i figured that was the right answer but i got it wrong

OpenStudy (amistre64):

1550 should be the right answer with what you have given

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the 1148.15 had to be a result of a wrong entry ...

OpenStudy (amistre64):

does the 8% mean that they keep all 8%? or that they keep all of the money made?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if they are keeping all the monies, and what they sell earns them an extra 8% then: 124 = M(1.08) 124/1.08 = M = 114.814...
