How would I go about simplifying -(sq.rt. -36) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sqrt(-36)= sqrt(36) times i, so 6i

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh and negative on outside makes it -6i

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, but can you explain how you got that? Why is there an "i"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i is the sqrt(-1). sqrt(-1) is an imaginary number. surely you've learned those?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have, but I'm homeschooling so it's difficult to teach myself the theories and my online textbook is not currently working. Thanks for your help.
