what is an easiest way to understand how to solve problems on linearequations and inequalities, in college algebra?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

remember how to add and subtract, multiply and divide really .... thats what always messed me up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, but i think its knowing what to group together, and coming up with the right answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are there anyone out there?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if you have an example of a problem that gives you the willies, post it up and lets see what we can do with it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that can help me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok ill try:o)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5x - 1>_24

OpenStudy (amistre64):

first thing I do is add 1 to each side 5x -1 +1 > -24 +1 5x > -23 ; now divide it all by 5 5x/5 > -23/5 x > -23/5

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the only thing to remember is that when you multiply or divide by a negative number; flip the sign in the middle ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, I may have put the question wrong, heres the question.. 5x - 1 \[\ge\] 24

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its the same process regardless of that the sign in the middle is :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

amistre64 are you still there?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the sign in the middle simply tells you how the 2 sides relate to each other; the steps to take to solve are exactly the same ...

im doing this class online in order to get my associates in Business administration w/concentration in Criminal justice. and this is my first online studies, and im really stuck with the college algebra...:o(

OpenStudy (amistre64):

:) I loathe online courses, i would much rather sit in a classroom and listen to the teacher drone on about stuff.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, but eith my children and work i didnt have time to be in the classroom.. im three units behind and im afraid that i will be kicked out of school..

OpenStudy (amistre64):

Math is as much a foriegn language as anything else. The written form can be confusing and hard to grasp at times simply because we are taking what we already know and trying to interpret it in a way that we can mathmatize it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes and i thought i was pretty good at math, and i guess im not that good, afterall. :o(

OpenStudy (amistre64):

When I started college again after 20 years off of school, I had to take the intermediate algebra course and learned that half the stuff I had forgotten, and the 1/4 of it I simply never knew

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats really the case for me ive been oout of school for over 20 years also, and they gave me the college algebra off the bat

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i finished the work for int.alg. in a week and a half so the teacher gave me the college algebra stuff and i finished all the work in there for college algebra and trig and started teaching meself calculus ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wow, i wish i had you to help me with this, or maybe get some tips from you, with different places to go to get the basics and then i know i can get through this.. if i can get the units in by this sunday at midnight, i think i can get back on track, im already on academic probation, if i dont get a B in this class i will be dropped. :0(

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i sent you an email ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok im getting it right now...

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if anything, send me a screenshot of it: http://take-a-screenshot.org/
