magic formula for vertex is \[-\frac{b}{2a}=-\frac{-4}{2}=2\] \[f(2)=2^2-4\times 2+1=-3\] so range is \[[-3,\infty)\]

\[2x^2+5x-3=0\] \[(2x-1)(x+3)=0\] \[x=-3\] or \[x=\frac{1}{2}\]
so negative on the interval \[(-3,\frac{1}{2})\]
