Before WW1 the Ottoman Empire was known as the "Sick man of Europe" It had fought with the Russia's for decades over the warm water ports in the Black sea who wanted it as their window into the west. Plagued by almost never ending war with countries and revolts in the Balkans had drained life out of the Empire. Throw in economic stagnation and slow reforms and you have a very ill country. After WW1 which it entered due to the Ottoman-Germany alliance they were completely crippled. It then had a civil war and emerged a republic losing most of its territory in the middle east and it also abolished the Monarchy. Today Turkey is on the rise with a expanding role in the area's politics some might even say Turkey is starting to flex her muscles.
