There are 23 PAIRS of chromosomes totaling up to 46 individual chromosomes

Mitosis is when a cell divides that produces two identical cells; what I mean to say is you start with one cell with n-pairs of chromosomes, the cell then divides into two cells that contain the same number of chromosomes as the original cell (n-pairs of chromosomes)

Meiosis is the process that is used for sexual reproduction in which you have one cell that starts off with n-pairs of chromosomes and after "division" you end up with 1/2n of the chromosomes (not pairs); in this case you end up with 4 "cells"
