I will be taking Praxis 1 in five days and the math is killing me...LITERALLY: I have the answer to the question for the life of me I can't figure out how they got to that answer. Two houses are for sale on the same street. The second house has 1,000 square feet less that twice the square feet of the first house. Together the houses have 4,400 square feet. What is the square footage of the first house?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

A+B = 4400 B = 2A - 1000 Use substitution A + (2A-1000) = 4400 3A = 5400 A = 1800

I worked on that for hours...THANK YOU!
