"Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage" In my opinion, this is THE best "adversity" story! You will also find The Book of Job in the Bible makes for a compelling story as well!!!

Push by Sapphire is good, but it's kind of hard to read, considering it's written by a borderline illiterate character. It was made into a movie last year called Precious, so you've probably heard of it. Another good one is Johnny Get Your Gone by Dalton Trumbo. That one's about a man in WWI who gets injured really really badly. It's good, but it's depressing.

Depends on reading level you need. Island of the Blue Dolphins is a really good easy read; A Separate Peace is a high school level classic. The Odyssey is bordering on college level reading, and The Count of Monte Christo might qualify, either the movie or the book, although the book can be a bit of a tough read. If the adversity does not need to be overcome, Grapes of Wrath would be an excellent upper-level book.
