If you have some religious background you grow up believing the chicken came first. And if you think about it if the egg came first and hatched how was the chicken made? Did it just fall out out of the sky? I believe the chicken had to have came first. It makes no sense otherwise.

Short answer: egg
Long answer: Evolution would indicate that it is the egg which would have come before the chicken. Whilst looking at a chicken laying eggs which hatch may look like an unbreakable cycle if taken over a short space of time over a period of centuries and millenia the cycle itself begins to spread away. At some point in history there was no such creature as a chicken, not even such a thing as a bird. For example back in the triassic period there were reptile creatures with hollow bone structures and possibly even feathers that laid eggs from which their offspring hatched but none of these was what w could class as a bird. Over the next 50-odd million years these gradually evolved, first becoming something like a bird, then onto the jungle fowl and finally these became the domesticated chicken we now know. So despite eggs having been around for all these years the chicken has only turned up around the same time block as humans. Therefore the egg greatly predates the chcken.
