i m using ubuntu 10.04...but sometimes it crashes in a way tat only choice left with me is to restart.......i fear tat doin so may make my harddisk fail.............nyone knows a rescue key lyk ctrl+alt+del in windowsz for ubuntu

There are some good instructions here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=369863 Also, despite common belief, manually restarting a machine is unlikely to do your hard drives any damage. It's technically possible to interrupt some important process when you do so, it's rare that that process is so important that it hurts your system, and would in the worst case scenario lead to needing to reinstall the OS. This is unlikely to happen - just avoid doing it during system updates ;)

Your Ubuntu could be a beta version with supposedly bugs in it. Try installing a latest version.
