Is there a way to have gifs images as the icon?

gifs are not supported for profile pictures for various reasons. You can use jpgs or pngs. One of the big reasons is that we don't want people to have animated profile pictures, as we feel they might distract users from their tasks, or be abusive, or both.

I was trying to put animated profile pics, but it make sense; it can be distracting

Yeah, colored text is a bad enough distraction ;)
