In Indian history, 1857 witnessed the first armed conflict between Indian states and the East India Company government. The British termed the outbreak of Independence movement as "Revolt of 1857", a mutiny. It started with the resentment against the policies of Company, but the most important incident which is attributed to the Revolt of 1857 was the one which brought Mangal Pandey, an ordinary Indian soldier in the Company battalion, into limelight.
