For a given matrix A.. The null space is the solution set to the equation \[A\vec{x} = \vec{0} \] The column space is the set of linearly independent columns in the matrix A.

but how do we knw the numbr of independent columns in a given matrix?

If you use row operations to put the matrix into its reduced form, the pivot columns will correspond to the independent columns of A.
