This is more of a practical question than a classroom one. I'm taking a road trip and I would like to know, traveling a total distance of 1173miles, how many times will I need to fill up a 22.5gallon tank capacity explorer. Mileage is 20miles per gallon. Lets assume I'll be doing 60mph.

if you're assuming 20 mpg and you have a 22.5 gallon tank, then you can go 20*22.5 = 450 miles per tank. 1173/450 is about 2.6 tank fulls. However that's assuming constant consumption of gas. Lots of things will alter this result like acceleration, braking, uphill, downhill, wind resistance, changes in velocity, city vs highway driving, etc.

Thanks! Just trying to get an estimate of how much to budget for gas.

no problem, hope that helps
