Maybe we can look at it this way. Imagine the usual diagonals and the point where they cross. Now put in a point somewhere else. You can see by the triangle rule that your sum is greater than you had for the usual diagonals. So I would have said that O is where the diagonals cross. (This is just off the cuff, not intended to be rigorous).
