the sum of three consecutive odd integers is 85 less than four times the first.what is the first integer? translate into the following stuation into a equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lets say the first integer is n. What would be the next odd number after n?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the next number would be 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, the next number would be n+2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And so on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So if you have 4 odd numbers (and the first one is n) added together they would be: n + (n+2) + (n+4) + (n+6)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

n+12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right. So that's the sum part. And they said that the sum was 85 less than 4 times the first number.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So n+12 = 4n - 85
