The planet was known by astronomers of ancient times and was associated with the mythology and religious beliefs of many cultures.so, The Romans named the planet after the Roman god Jupiter.

The Ancients believed that these celestial bodies that they could see with their eyes were the physical manifestations of their Gods. Jupiter could be seen in the sky, therefore a person could conclude that Jupiter was looking down upon him. Compare it to various indigineous people who believed in "Mother Earth" and "Father Sky"
