adding integers:8+(-17)

-9

but how?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is like having only $8 in your pocket and wanting to buy something that costs $17. By how much are you short? When you have to add 2 numbers with opposite signs, subtract the smaller from the bigger one and keep the sign of the bigger one. So it will be 17-8=9 and keep the negative sign of the 17, the answer is -9

Also, you can try understanding it by using a number line. Mark the zero on the line and then mark the positive numbers on the right and the negative on the left. Now, start from the zero counting 8 in the positive direction (this is adding +8). Then, from the positive 8, start counting 17 to the left, in the negative direction (this is adding -17). You will count 8 when you reach zero, and then you'll count 9 more (-1, -2, -3, -4, -5, -6, -7, -8, -9). This is how your answer is -9.
