distribute the .5 --> 1-(x/2) = 1.5x+7
subtract the 7 --> 1-7-(x/2) = 1.5x+7-7
add the (x/2) --> -6 = 2x
divide by 2 --> -6/2 = 2x/2
resulting in -3 = x
