How many different arrangements of the letters in the word "PURPLE" are there

OpenStudy (angela210793):

6!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you take the number of letters available (6) and multiply it by the number of positions available (6) you'll get the right answer: 36 = 6^2

OpenStudy (angela210793):

36????? O.o u got 6 choices for the 1st letter,5 for the second,4 for the third,3 for the forth,2 for the fifth and 1 for the sixth=6!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

{1,2,3,4,5,6} P U R P L E can go to any of these numbers, so if you spelt UPRPLE with U=1, P=2, etc. then that represents 1 combination. PURPLE itself is also a combination. Each letter can be equal to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6, and since you have 6 letters, 6^2 = 36.

OpenStudy (angela210793):

Ok...I'm confused now.....

OpenStudy (amistre64):

6! -- is what I see. 2!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

when some items are identical to others: n! --------------- n1! n2! n3! ... nk!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

since we have 2 letters allike; and the rest are just singles 6! -- would be it 2!

OpenStudy (angela210793):

OpenStudy (amistre64):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):
