Simply, it traces the beginning of our universe. From the first micro seconds of intense energy due to the epic clash between particles and antiparticles  to the manifestations of the four fundamental forces. The rapid expansion of the universe in the very beginning and how it eventually cooled enough for particles of matter and elements like hydrogen to form.

It has been formulated after realizing that universe is expanding, through the redshift of galaxies' light... Calculating the speed of expansion, physicists hypothesized a beginning of the space-time and they called it "big bang"
