Given that the points form a figure with 4 right angles, do the points (2, 2) , (12, -5) and (12, -5 ) represent the vertices of a square or a rectangle? please Explain.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"(12,-5) and (12,-5)"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh sorry (2, 2) , (12, 2) , (12, -5) and (2, -5)

OpenStudy (blacksteel):

Well, we can see that the difference in the x values (2 and 12) is 10, while the difference in the y values (-5 and 2) is 7. Thus, the figure we form will have sides parallel to the x axis of length 10 and sides parallel to the y axis of length 7. Since a figure is a square only if all 4 sides are of the same length, the resulting shape is a rectangle.
