let f(x)=8x-2, find the average rate of change from 5to 8

OpenStudy (amistre64):

f(8) - f(5) -------- 8-5

OpenStudy (blacksteel):

amistre is right, but for a little more detail, we want to find the change in the function's value from 5 to 8, f(8) - f(5) and then divide that by the change in distance, (8-5). Thus we get amistre's answer, f(8) - f(5) / (8-5), or 24/3, or 8.
