Find the distance d(A,B) between points A and B A(7,8) B(-1,23)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

d=sqrt[(y2-y1)^2+(x2-x1)^2]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sqrt(8^2+15^2)=17

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[d=\sqrt{(23-8)^{2}+(-1-7)^{2}}=\sqrt{225+64}=\sqrt{289}=17\]

dipankarstudy - btw, at the college level student probably can understand negative means the opposite of a number but in middle school and even high school sometimes they think it means the number must be negative

OpenStudy (callisto):

opposite of a number? why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i used reciprocal instead of opposite.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and i'm extremely sorry if it made any confusion.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Callisto - we are talking about the slope of a perpendicular line. I teach it as opposite reciprocal because students can misinterpret negative reciprocal to mean a negative number.

OpenStudy (callisto):

huh, that would be more confusing actually..but thanks
