what basics do i need to be a poet?
The ability to express thoughts through metaphor.
The great thing about creative writing is that most of it is not easily quantifiable. There are a couple of base rules you need such as metaphor manipulation, well rounded creativity, and good use of imagery, but practically everything else is in your hands to mold with. If you are looking for a specific type of poetry that you are wanting to write, then there are of course rules that you need to follow. Take Haiku's for example. They follow a basic 5/7/5 set up with 5 syllables in the first and third line and 7 in the second. The most important thing for you to know in my opinion though is the desire to express oneself in a unique way. Good luck.
Scar tissue, empty jumbo beer bottles and a couple of weeks living in an old car. No seriously, don't take anything seriously, especially scar tissue, empty bottles and a week in a bad car.
You have to have somethinginteresting to say and in an interesting way, with metaphor. Have to be good with language.
I am not sure you need to have something interesting to say, sometimes something different is enough. Eventually, it might be interesting. Like right now, Preetha is thinking that what I have written is not interesting, but down the road she might. Or long after we are all dead, someone somewhere will think that contradictions are wonderfully useful in poetry.
if you want to be a natural poet you should express your feelings of nature by writing small poems and read a lot of poems so you can write it by your self
