Neglect the effect of rotation of earth.Suppose the earth suddenly stops attracting objects placed near its surface.A person standing on the surface of earth will (a) fly up (b) slip along the surface (c) fly along tangent to the earth's surface (d) remain standing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

answer is (d)... since there is no rotation, so the person will continue with velocity which he/she had at the time of removing the gravity

OpenStudy (anonymous):

answer is (c) not (d). this question is same as suppose you are rotation a stone (that is tie in a rope) with rope and if the rope break then in which direction the stone will go? the stone will go along the tangent of the point of breaking of rope.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dear ramkrishna.... how can you say that answer is c... i think answer is d.... because earth has a spin rotation ( orbital and radial )... as the statement of newton first law..." every body continue its state of motion and rest unless an external force act upon it to change its state.... or we can say that when a body moves with constant velocity ( magnitude and direction) the net force acted upon it is zero... so by newton law answer d is correct...do u have any solid reason...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In order to stay in orbit you need a centripetal force. The earth holds its orbit due to the force acting between the sun and the earth. But the force between the sun and the man is very weak (mass of the man...) and he will not stay in orbit. But probally do as written in C, But it also depends on where the man is standing...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@physics era, the question says that the earth suddenly stops spinning....which means it was spinning first, thus a person standing will continue to be in motion when the force stops acting....hence (c)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dear @pranav... a person is in rest when the the earth is rotating.... so when the earth's stop then by first law of newton person will continue its state of motion...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ physics era........ the person is not at rest..he is acted upon by a centripital force .and as a result his speed is constant but velocity varies.. so when the earth comes to a halt the person tries to remain in that uniform speed he possessed and speed of the person at any instant is a tangent to the path followed .. and the correct ans. is C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mr. sigh , thnx for correction...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@all: I think, question says, "Neglect the effect of rotation of earth." SO, earth is not spinning, right? So no centripetal force etc.
