who is your favorite president in American history and why?
Personally, I would resort to FDR as my favorite President. He was a smart man. In times of trouble, he rolled with the punches and created his plans to adapt to the helpless America. Sure it was not his First and Second New Deal's that ultimately lifted us from the Depression, but it was his revolutionary plan that gave some morale to a much struggling America. American government actually cared for the well-being of America. Ultimately, that was the most effective thing a President during that time with those conditions could do.
Andrew Jackson because he was a bad***. He was in several duels including one with a fellow named wingspanenson who he let take the first shot. After letting the man shoot him he shot and killed wingspanenson and "walked it off".
I say FDR was terrible because he not only served four terms, brought The country into an expensive, deadly war, but his economic plan for recovering from the depression only made it worse while his decision to remove the gold standard still affects us today. Best president was Martin Van Buren because he didn't do very much. He didn't pass any restrictive laws and left the people alone.
Reagan because I love the rich and hate the poor.
abraham lincoln...
Truman because he had the stones to drop the bomb. Also he ended the wars in Europe, Japan AND Korea
Teddy Roosevelt, was shot and then continued delivering his brief 90-minute speech.
Lockesmith at what point did you think that the US could have stayed out of that 'deadly war'? Perhaps they should have just asked for sanctions against Japan for her cowardly attack on Pearl Harbor. One other thing, in relative terms the US came out of WW2 in a much healthier financial state than the european ecconomies. FDR was a man of the time and a courageous one at that. In europe he is seen in a very good light.
George Washington. A true British gentleman who founded a great nation!
George Washington, he turned down power to tend to his farm. not once but twice! He was offered to be a king but said "no we just freed ourselves from a king we do not need another one." then after his second term of office he was asked to run again but said "no i would rather tend to my fields" how can anyone be better than that? plus he lead us in the revoutionary war freing us from england. you cant get any better
smeltdipper2000...but he wasnt really the one tending his farm was he?
Thomas Jefferson, he stood for true pro individual liberty beliefs and was a true small government president.
It is all subjective isn't it? Jefferson was a true small government president a bit like Ronald Reagan who shared this line of thinking. What a bout Jimmy Carter? He wasn't small government but he was a decent humanitarian president! Abraham Lincoln must have had some great spin doctoirs around him because he LOOKED like a humanitarian president too. He wasn't though, was he! He was only interested in the preservation of the Union. Emancipation of the slaves was a political stroke that he was only able to pull off after a close victory at Sharpsburg (sorry Antietam Creek).Talking of Jefferson, what about Jeff Davis who was a joint president in a way wasn't he? Very popular with the folks in the south, supported by the very best army officers that graduated from West Point in that generation, into a coherent fighting force that repelled an invading army for the best part of two years (coming close to taking Washington DC) and all with very limited industrial strength. His greatest failure? Not abolishing slavery on the day that Fort Sumter was fired upon.
tehmagik.... i suppose that is true but thats got nothing to do with how good his presidency was
Ronald Reagan, because he gave the last punch to the Soviet Union :D
I wonder which president will give the 'last punch' to al-quaida! The Soviet Union could never compete in a capatilist contyrolled world with its controlled ecconomy and would have run out of steam anyway. Who would you rather have in the world as 'an enemy' out of the two?
