An idiom is a statement or phrase that uses connotation to emphasize or show exaggerated meaning. For example, I bombed the test would be an idiom since you did not actually throw bombs at a test.

exactly right, some more examples are "kick the bucket" for dying, "bend over backwards" for trying real hard, and "cough it up" for give it to me.
