what basics do i need to become a poet
being mentally unstable usually helps a lot
you just need to inspire and as livewire56 said you also need to be mentally unstable :D
And drinking. But anyway, in all seriousness, you just have to study the way you put words together. You need to work out a style and flow. Scribble whatever pops into your head onto a piece of paper. Monologue your life in the third person in your head as you walk down the street. When you're confident enough with your voice, go for rhyming. Doesn't matter if you suck, it's your words. When you're feeling good with that, work in imagery and more complex words. Play with the beat and flow. Be your own person, but look to the greats to see how words can work together.
i think the desire alone is good enough... everything else you'll just develop with practice, but that eager you feel, the need to express something.... is the most important of it all.
u need to have a l;ot of voicee
can u help me????????????
help you with what?
You'll need something that passionately inspires you to write. Be it love, social injustice, beauty, nature, existence alone, etc. Without inspiration, poems seem empty and forced. With it, you'll find a voice naturally. Additionally, a strong vocabulary and command of grammar (and how to manipulate it) are useful. Also, what do you need help with?
Several beat me to the punch about mental instability. I stand by it however--that's always the frame of mind I have been in when I write poetry. You can't be "taught" creativity--either you have it or you don't. But you do have to have a voice and something to say. Now, do you want to write epic, structured, long-winded poems with hundreds of stanzas? You may want to learn about meter and timing and rhythm and rhyme. Free style is a little easier. But a format might help give you structure and point you in the direction you need for "thinking like a poet." God help us. Practice. Write. Keep a notebook. Write a song. Write a sonnet. Write about your innermost thoughts and feelings. And for God's sake, don't show anyone.
thanx guys
you are welcome... you should also give medals, so the question closes and is not longer considered an Unanswered question
