whats the working process of vandergraph?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

WORKING PROCESS OF VANDEGRAFF GENERATOR:- To accelerate positive charges, comb (lower) is maintained at high positive potential (10kV). Air near to the comb (lower) gets ionised. The negative ions are attracted by the comb (lower) and neutralised while positive ions are repelled to the belt. These charges move up with the belt where the comb (upper) draw these charges and are transferred to top of the sphere. This process goes on and more and more charge is transferred to the sphere. When charge on the sphere increases, its leakage to the surroundings also increases. To check leakage of this charge to the surrounding, the whole appratus is enclosed in a earth gaseous chamber. When sufficient charge develops on the sphere, potential the charge accelerates through the discharge tube and strike the target placed under it to produce the desired effect.

It is crucial that the charge be delivered by the belt to the inside of the sphere or dome of the Van de Graff where the electric field is 0 so that you can continue to deliver charge without having to do work against the increasingly large field exterior to the dome
