what are the benifits of tonsilectomy?
Tonsillectomy is the method of removing tonsils for the treatment of tonsillitis. Tonsillitis is referred to the inflammation of tonsils. It is generally caused by virus or bacteria. Tonsillitis as such occurs most commonly among children though they occur among adults also but are quite rare. Some of the symptoms that could be noticed in a child suffering from tonsillitis are sore throat, fever, swollen glands etc. Tonsils among children are most commonly caused by streptococcus virus. To a certain extent, tonsillitis is recurrent, and at a certain stage it could be chronic also. And though there are a number of treatments available but the most effective way of treatment is tonsillectomy. However it might not be the right course of action for everyone suffering from tonsillitis. One should always consult a doctor first before straight away heading for tonsillectomy. Researchers have found that adults as well as children who have removed their tonsils have a greater benefit. They are less likely to develop recurrent tonsillitis at a later stage. Tonsillectomy, however, might not have long term benefits but those children who have undergone the method do not suffer from recurrent tonsillitis for the next two years. Though after the said time span, there would be hardly any difference in the condition of the children. Yet studies have shown that those children who have had their tonsils removed tend to suffer less from tonsillitis as compared to those who haven’t had their tonsils removed. The main reason for children going through tonsillectomy is to primarily treat the obstructed airways. However, among adults the main reason for removing their tonsils is chronic tonsillitis. The ratio of adults suffering from tonsillitis is far lesser than the number of children suffering from tonsillitis. But according to statistics, the number of adults who goes through tonsillectomy still constitutes 1/3rd of the total number. According to records, about 57% adults had gone through tonsillectomy in order to treat chronic tonsillitis. And 98% percent took the surgery to clear the obstruction in the air passage. Tonsillectomy does have some short term benefits and ease you from the trouble of tonsillitis but doctors have strictly cautioned to weigh the complications that follow the process keeping in mind the short term benefits. Sore throat usually follows tonsillectomy, which to some patients can get severe. There are other cons of tonsillectomy such as dehydration, earache, dental injuries etc. Such disadvantages must be properly weighed before going in for tonsillectomy. However a very recent research has shown that tonsillectomy improves the quality of lives in both children and adults. Some have even gone to the extent of commenting that unless a long term benefit is known one should not opt for the process. People go for tonsillectomy in order to treat other problems such as sleep apnea, sleep disorder breathing, behavior and learning process etc.
People with recurrent Tonsillitis and upper respiratory tract infections are the beneficiaries. The frequency of throat infection will decrease. The frequency of ear infection (otitis media) will decrease. The frequency of Throat infection becoming Lower respiratory tract infection will decrease. Lot of money is saved from spending for medicines and lot of work hours are saved. If there is Adenoid enlargement too. Adeno-tonsillectomy will cure Snoring.
