how does a cardiac arrest come about?
When blood supply is interrupted (occluded), tissue damage occurs. This damage is called an infarct. A myocardial infarction (MI) is when this happens to the heart muscle. This is what's commonly known as a heart attack.
The conductive system of heart stops.......... ie the Sino-Atrial node, AtrioVentricular node, Purkinje fibers, Bundle of his.......System stops generating impulses which makes the heart pump blood...... This usually occurs following an insult due to vascular insufficiency like Myocardial Infarction.....,Electric shock etc
a cardiac arrest is when the heart fails to pump effectively. there are several disorders that can lead to this : take for example a heart attack in which the heart muscle dies when an artery is occluded. if too much of the muscle dies, the heart can't pump effectively and you go into cardiac arrest. using the heart attack example again, sometimes arrythmias can occur. i had a patient who had chest pain go straight into ventricular fibrillation where the heart quivers and doesn't pump blood adequately at all. non-cardiac related causes of cardiac arrest include trauma, rupture of the aorta, drug overdoses, and blood clots that go straight to your lungs.
