what is the role of a chief justice

He is the head of the Supreme court, so he gets to preside over impeachments, speak first at trials, administers the presidential oath of office, sets the agenda for weekly meetings of the Supreme court, if he is in the majority of a vote he gets to decide who gets the write the opinion. He also has a bunch of other functions.

The Chief Justice is the highest judicial officer in the country, and acts as a chief administrative officer for the federal courts and appoints the director of the Administrative Office of the United States Courts. The Chief Justice also serves as a spokesperson for the judicial branch.
