Explain, in your own words, how to evaluate a polynomial for a given value of the variable. Demonstrate the process with an example.

Evaluate x^2 -1 when x is 1. Describe what you did.

I guess my question is that answer 1 or -1? if so then I can explain it. If not can you help me understand that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There is a difference between a "polynomial" and a "polynomial equation". The first is like I gave you. The second is if you put the polynomial equal to something (say 0). So if it's just a polynomial, you put x = 1 and 1-1 = 0. If it's an equation then your plus/minus 1 is correct. <OK?

Ah! I think I understand. I see where I made my mistake. We just started working on these types of problems and they are a bit confusing after jumping from my last chapter.

Thank you for your help! :)
