10 students are running a race. The fastest 3 will win a gold medal. How many different ways can the students win these medals?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

all i need to know if this is combinations or permutations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in permutation x1x2 and x2x1 are different cases, in combinations they both come under one case, now that you know the difference .. you should be able to findout which one it is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

permutations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well how i learned it was that order counts in perm. and it doesnt count in comb. seeing as its asking how many different ways they could win i put combinations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you explain a way for me to determine that because i have another one of these

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 3^10 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Think about it this way, say student A,B,C are the winners and get the medals. It is the same as if B,C,A are the winners.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer will be 45 ways for sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12C2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10*9*8 ways

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the final answer if repetation is not allowed

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that the answer???

OpenStudy (anonymous):
