I kinda dont understand the first one...i think there are only 3 ways a student can get a medal; either get 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.  For the second question, you would calculate (10)(9)(8).  There are 10 possible people that could get the 1st place medal.  Then after that there will be 9 that can possible get the 2nd place medal.  Then after that 8 that could get 3rd place.  so there are 720 possible ways to hand out the medals.
