There is a set of 100 observations with a mean of 40 and a standard deviation of 0. What is the value of the smallest observation in the set?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

a standard deviation of 0 means that all the values are the same ...

OpenStudy (amistre64):

in other words; none of the values deviate from the mean :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if i can figure out that one number then i have my answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then it is 40?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yep; what is the lowest value of 40 that is 0 away from 40?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ummm can u put that in caveman talk plz?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

that is caveman talk :) if the mean of all the observations is 40; and there is no deviation among the samples ... then the lowest value has to be 40
