This is basically what @imranmeah91 said, but I'll say it again to clarify. Think of the original price as 100%. Now if the sale is 40% off, how much percent of the original do we have now? 60%. So we set the equation up like this, with x being the original price (what you are solving for): 0.6(x) = 89.21 0.6 is the 60% converted to a decimal Now all we have to do is divide both sides by 0.6 and we should have our answer. Which should come out to be 148.683333..... and then just round to how many places the problem specifies.
