This mostly applies to studies where the subjects are human. This is simply the part of the study where the researcher brings up a protocol in order to protect the basic rights of the human subject involved which might include the informed consent of the subject to be studied, confidentiality agreements, and other premises of general care-taking. This may also regard nonhuman subjects in that the subjects are being treated humanely and not being cause harm to their ability to reproduce/live comfortably, etc.
