can somebody explain to me what surface area is? like for a rectangular prisim with a square bottom, would that just be adding up the areas of each piece?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its the amount of area that the surface covers ... its top bottom and sides

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yes, add up all the areas of each piece; lateral means side .... so lateral area refers to just the sides :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what about for the volume of that same shape how do i determine it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Calculate the area of the end face (the shape that you get when you cut the prism at a right angle to the base) then multiply this area by the length of the prism remembering your answer is always in cubic units.
