Carlee wants to rent a car for a week and pay no more than $150. If the rental company charges $80 per week plus $.18 per mile. What is the greatest number of miles she can drive the rental car and stay within her budget?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First looking at this, you know that she can't rent the car for more than 1 week, since she will spend more for the second week, which will take away from the amount of miles she can drive (in this case, renting for 2 weeks would also put her over her budget). Therefore (if x is the amount of miles she drives):\[AMOUNTPAID = $80 + .18x\] If AMOUNTPAID = $150 (her budget):\[$150 = $80 + .18x\] \[x = 388.888889 miles = 388 miles\]

subtract 80 from 150 the cost for the car, then divide the answer by 18 cents( the charge per mile) good luck
