A rectangular board is 40cm by 16cm. An L-shape of uniform width is cut from it. If the remaining area is 340cm^2, find the width of the L-shape.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First find out the area of the L shape that is by subtracting the remaining area from the total area, Once you have that, split the L shape into two rectangles. See if you can do it now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but the two rectangles would not be identical.. ones longer than the other.. i think we have to use quadratic equations to solve.. but idk how. :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes correct.. see i have posted ..a picture

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry for the bad.. picture!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

see if get it now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha :) hey, i kinda get it.. i think..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea all you have to do is now solve that quadratic equation :P
