distributive property-multiplycation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what about it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2(x+y)= 2x + ____ y i don't know abt the blanks.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the distributive property basically says that if you have something that looks like this: a(b+c) then you can rewrite it like this: a(b) + a(c) for example, lets look at this problem: 5(10+x) we can rewrite it like this: 5(10)+5(x) 50+5x so your equation would look like this: 2(x+y)=2x+2y

ok so 4(m+4) = 4m+16 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep, you got it

ok guys what abt a negitvie like just say -1 (p+q)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just distribute it to each of them like you did the other number.. -1(p+q) = (-1)p + (-1)q
