need help please! An airplane travels 1,800 miles in 3 hours flying with the wind. On the return trip, flying against the wind it takes 4 hours to travel 2,000 miles. Find the rate of the plane in still air.

550 mph

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[1800 = (v_{plane}+v_{air})(3), 2000 = (v_{plane}-v_{air})(4)\] so we have a system of equations we want to solve: \[600 = v_{plane}+v_{air}, 500 = v_{plane} -v_{air} \] adding them gives: \[1100 = 2v_{plane} \Rightarrow v_{plane} = 550 mph\]
