The shaded regions are 45/45/90 triangles and the formula for triangle area is bh/2 and you have 2 of them so you want bh and bas and height are the same so you want
b or h squared.

So let's take BO = 6 Cos 45 (135+45=180) = 6/sqrt 2 squared = 18 (check it).
