what is thermal expansion?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In what context is the displacement?

OpenStudy (hba):

every context i suppose

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the thermal expansion is the increase of length or volume of object due to change in themperature

OpenStudy (hba):

only lenght and volume

Thermal expansion is the dimensions of an object upon increase in Temperature. When heat is applied to an object it causes the atoms comprising that object to move more rapidly (heat is just energy, which increases the kinetic energy of the atoms). In solids, expansion occurs because the amplitude of vibration of the atoms increases. This is why when you heat a metal it will melt, as the amplitude of the vibrations become so large, it breaks the atomic bonding, turning the metal to a liquid. In Liquids and gases, expansion is due to the individual atoms and molecules moving faster.
