I find the best poems are ones that end up contradicting themselves. Go with one thought, specifically to totally reverse it. This draws the reader in and interacts with their perspective.

That said, any good poem should shake or stimulate its reader's perspective.

Choose an issue that you feel needs to be addressed. Preferably something you can feel a personal connection to. This will help you immensely in your writing.

Also don't be afraid to use a different style. Too many poems are just stock standard rhyming verses. Mix it up. Write a Haiku or type of poem that is less common. And you don't NEED to rhyme either! Your poem should flow.
