I really need help with negotiating around  the scheme and edwin editors. Everytime I evaluate something I get an error even when I copy the example from the SICP book. Anybody help?

Try using DrRacket, its a lot easier to use. If you get an error regarding the use of a procedure, you might just need to define it. In my version of scheme, for example the procedure -1+ wasn't defined, so I had to create it before using it.
